To say The Wire is one of the best TV shows of all time would possibly be an understatement. Right now I'm just starting to watch the 4th season on DVD and it just gets better every year.
The Wire tells the story of a city. It's set in Baltimore, but it could just as easily be here in St Louis. The story centers around the drug trade in the inner city and we see events unfold from all sides. And I do mean all sides.
The show bounces back and forth between two worlds, the world of the "respectable citizens" and the underworld of the inner city. Sometimes the lines get blurred. The heroes are not all good, and the villains are not all bad and you will find yourself connected to all of them.
Each season has taken on a different aspect of the city. The first season is primarily about the drug trade and the emergence of a Avon Barksdale, a new player who's right hand man Stringer Bell is taking night classes to get his business and marketing degree.
Since I have some involvement with similar events in real life, I can honestly say that this show rings truer than any other crime drama I've ever seen. All of the characters are fleshed out and unique, avoiding stereotypes.
The first few shows of the first season drag a little bit, but only because there's so much going on. Like a long freight train, it starts off slowly, but once it gets moving it doesn't stop. If you have not seen this show, then put the first season in your Netflix queue right away.

I'm considering this as both you and Patrick Walsh recommend. Pat is a
hysterically funny youngster, who reviews movies, writes, etc. I usually
agree with his reviews except that he might be a little too critical at
times (he's just too young, but I expect great things from this guy).
