My Own Kind Of Freedom

posted 02/16/2008

Longtime readers will recall that I am a huge fan of the sadly short lived Firefly TV show.  It is without a doubt the finest Sci-fi show ever made for TV, and is easily one of the top 10 TV shows of any genre ever made (IMHO).  There's a marathon on the SciFi channel this Monday if you're interested.

I just found out through John that author Steven Brust wrote a novel in the Firefly 'verse that was not available for purchase, but was available for download.  I downloaded the PDF file, printed it, and read it.

My Own Kind Of Freedom rocks.

It's rare that a book based on characters portrayed on TV finds the genuine voice of all the characters.  I'm a long time Trekker who has read tons of fan fiction in the Trek universe and while a lot of it is very good, very little of it rings completely true.

Steven Brust has found the voice for all of the diverse characters in Firefly, and written a whale of a good story.  Lot's of action, and if you look closely there's an examination of good and evil and the moral middle ground that can arise from events.

Easy says: CHECK IT OUT!!!

PS-  You can download it HERE

Glad to help, and I second everything you've said about it.

Truly a great book. It came across just like an episode of Firefly. I sincerely hope he writes another one.
