    Musicology

    posted 05/06/2004

Last night my wife & I went to see Prince. All I can say is "wow!" He kicked ass. My ears are still ringing. The band was tight, and played their asses off. It was a great show, and worth every bit of $70. Plus, the ticket included his new CD, which I am listening to as I surf. So far I am impressed.

It was great to see a concert where the artist doesn't just come out and play the songs the way that they sound on the album. There was lots of improvisation, and new arrangements. Especially the new arrangements.

He came out solo with an acoustic guitar and played "Little Red Corvette", "Cream", and a blues song that I'd never heard before. I would never in my wildest dreams have expected to hear those two songs in an acoustic set. Now I'm hoping that he records an "unplugged" session.

    Awesome!

I was never a big Prince fan when I was younger. I was part of the "Disco Sucks!" crowd when I was in high school, and as a result I never listened to much R&B or funk. Yes, I was a dumbass.

My sister was a huge fan, but I never was. Then I sort of "discovered" Prince while I was in college. I was at a friends house partying one night when he put on this amazing record. I listened to it, enthralled by the layers of the different instruments and the quality of the lyrics. Or maybe it was just that I was really stoned.

Either way, when I found out it was Prince (The Dirty Mind album) I went home the next weekend and pulled out my little sister's Prince albums.

    And I became a convert.
