Don't Hate Me Because I'm Free

posted 07/27/2005
While surfing recently I came across this article in The National Review: Captain America, Traitor?:

The National Review would be as funny as Landover Baptist or Betty Bowers if not for the fact that these people actually believe the drivel that they spew.

If you were too lazy busy to click over to the article, in a nutshell it takes Marvel Comics to task for having one of their comic book characters actually having the nerve to say that there might be some things in US history that we maybe shouldn't be too proud of.

Let me state here and now that in no way do I think that the blame for 9/11 should be placed on the USA. Two wrongs don't make a right. Never have, never will.  However, anyone who doesn't think that our government doesn't bear some of the responsibility for the events of that day, and many others just hasn't been paying attention. Actions have consequences, and when you choose an action you choose the consequences of that action as well.

Here's the thing that always sticks out for me, the unanswered question:

What was the motivation for the attack on 9/11/2001?

What did they want to accomplish?

To make a blanket statement like 'they hate freedom' or 'they want to destroy our way of life' is just silly. Osama bin Laden is not an idiot. He had a specific purpose in mind.

His stated goal is to unite the world as an Islamic state, but he knows that's not going to happen anytime soon. Not until he consolidates his power base, and builds an army of followers.I have opinions about this, but for today I'm more intersted in getting the questions out there.

2500 years ago Sun Tzu said:

"'If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle."

It's important for us to recognize the things that we have done as a country that make us an inviting target. The USA is not always looked on as a shining beacon of light. The actions of our government in the past, and our greed and consumption of the world's resources give a lie to the words of our leaders.

Again, this is NOT to say that we had it coming. I would personally put a bullet in the head of any of these assholes that are sending out kids to blow up themselves and as many innocents as they can take with them in the name of God.

But let's fix what's broke here first.

It's amazing when you think that someone from that long ago had more common sense than people do today. I seriously doubt whether Bush has ever read "The Art Of War". If he has, it totally went over his head.

Great post, couldn't agree more.

The sad part is that you had to pepper this with "I'm not condoning this behavior" statements. Some folks inevitably are going to view "knowledge of objective history" as "being on their side." There's a lot of simple people in the world.

We all know that our government isn't filled with saints and angels. They're people, with the same motivations as everyone else. Some benevolent, some selfish. And you really do have to wonder how many times a nation can interfere in the affairs and governments of foreign nations without provocation before somebody decides to take exception to it. It's sad, but it was pretty inevitable. And, unless we get our shit together, it's likely going to happen again.
